Today, Omar Yaghi, chemistry professor from the University of California, Berkeley (UC), and co-founder of the California Research Alliance (CARA) by BASF, was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
The prize was awarded to Yaghi as well as to Richard Robson of the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Susumu Kitagawa of Kyoto University, Japan, for creating “molecular constructions with large spaces through which gases and other chemicals can flow. These constructions, metal-organic frameworks, can be used to harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide, store toxic gases, or catalyze chemical reactions.”
Among his many outstanding achievements, Professor Yaghi co-founded the California Research Alliance (CARA) by BASF, along with UC Berkeley professor Peidong Yang and BASF’s Kerstin Schierle-Arndt, as a way to bring together industry experts with researchers from leading West Coast universities. Since the multidisciplinary research network first began in 2014, it has produced over 120 research projects with 11 universities, over 90 faculty members and 180 students, as well as 52 patent applications.
We congratulate Professor Yaghi on his remarkable accomplishment!
